Sports-Related Workshops
As part of the UNSW Sports Medicine Society initiative, we aim to provide students with a range of SEM-related opportunities for them to up-skill. Workshops such as first aid courses, strapping courses, and sports injury assessment aim to provide students with skills that are not extensively covered as part of the Medicine curriculum - and which are useful for future clinicians in a range of fields, particularly Sports Medicine. Each year, we host a number of courses including First Aid courses at heavily discounted prices with providers such as St John Ambulance.
On October 7th-8th, we will also host a Level 1 Sports Trainer Course in conjunction with Sports Medicine Australia, at a heavily discounted price. It's a fantastic course for anyone involved in sport (incl. coaching), covering the management of sports injuries, sports taping, and transporting an injured athlete. Clinical Opportunities
We have established an informal partnership with our local Sports Medicine clinic, Orthosports (160 Belmore Rd, Randwick). Here students are able to sit into clinics with SEM Physicians. Orthosports also occasionally host GP education workshops and practice fellowship clinical exams for their SEM registrars, both of which students can volunteer as mock patients. From these experiences, students expose themselves into the world of Sports & Exercise Medicine and gain additional skills in MSK medicine.

Research
Previously, the UNSW Sports Medicine Society has investigated the ways in which social media can be used to promote Sports & Exercise Medicine as a speciality amongst medical students. Our social media strategy included Facebook, Twitter, Google Forms, mail-outs and more. Not only did these strategies lead to improved exposure of SEM in the undergraduate sphere, but also enabled international collaboration with the global sports medicine community. The abstract can be viewed at here. We also did a poster presentation on our findings at the 2015 ASICS Sports Medicine Australia Conference.
